Ourika Valley Day Trip from Marrakech

Waterfalls, Berber Culture and Atlas Mountain Scenery — 60 km from Marrakech

The Ourika Valley is the closest and most accessible escape from Marrakech into the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. In under 90 minutes, you leave the noise of the medina behind and arrive in a lush green valley carved by the Ourika river, surrounded by Berber villages, walnut trees and the first peaks of the Atlas rising sharply above. The highlight of the day is a hike to the famous Setti Fatma waterfalls — seven cascades tumbling down from the mountains above the valley’s last village. This is one of the most popular and rewarding day trips from Marrakech, and with a knowledgeable local guide, it becomes so much more than a sightseeing stop.

Day Trip Itinerary

9:00 AM — Marrakech Departure: Pick up from your hotel or riad. Drive south through the Houz Plains towards the Atlas Mountains. The landscape changes quickly — flat farmland gives way to rocky hills, then green valley slopes.

First Stop — Women’s Argan Oil Cooperative: Visit a local cooperative run entirely by Amazigh (Berber) women, where you can see the traditional argan oil production process — from cracking the nuts by hand to pressing the oil. Sample fresh argan oil with warm bread and honey.

Ourika Valley Drive: Continue up the valley along the Ourika river, passing through small Berber villages with traditional adobe houses clinging to the hillsides. On Mondays, stop at the famous weekly Berber market in Tnine Ourika — a bustling, completely local souk where you will see spices, livestock, handwoven baskets and dried herbs sold in the open air.

Setti Fatma Village and Waterfall Hike: Arrive in Setti Fatma (1,500m above sea level), the last village reachable by road and the starting point for the waterfall trail. Your guide leads you on a 1.5-hour hike up through fig trees, rocky scrambles and the river gorge to reach the first and second waterfalls. The views down the valley and the cool spray from the cascades are worth every step.

Riverside Lunch: After the hike, enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at a riverside restaurant beside the Ourika river — tagine, fresh salads, warm bread and mint tea, with the sound of the water and mountain views on all sides.

Return to Marrakech: Depart mid-afternoon and return to Marrakech by approximately 6:00 PM.

Day Trip Details

  • Difficulty: Easy (waterfall hike is moderate — good shoes recommended)
  • Duration: Full day (~9 hours including transport)
  • Distance from Marrakech: 60–65 km (approx. 75–90 minutes drive)
  • Suitable for: All ages and fitness levels, families, couples, solo travellers
  • Best season: Year-round. Spring (March–May) for peak waterfall flow. Summer for cool mountain air. Autumn for golden light. Winter for snow-capped peaks.

What to Bring

Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots (sandals are not suitable for the waterfall trail). Light layers — the valley is cooler than Marrakech. Sunscreen, a hat and a camera. Swimming clothes in summer if you want to dip your feet in the river pools near Setti Fatma.

Best Time to Visit the Ourika Valley

The Ourika Valley is a year-round destination. Spring brings the most dramatic waterfalls as snowmelt fills the river. Summer offers cool relief from Marrakech’s heat. Autumn delivers golden light and fewer crowds. In winter, the valley is quieter, with a chance of snow on the upper peaks above the village. The Monday Berber market is an unmissable bonus if your schedule allows it.
